Today was the last school day before the Thanksgiving break. Instead of having a regular math lesson, we played Multiplication Baseball. That way no one had to have homework over the holiday.
I randomly picked teams of eleven students each since four of our class weren’t here today. The first two names picked became the captains of Team Eddie and Team William. Students rolled two twelve-sided die and had five seconds to say a correct answer. Answers of 1 to 36 earned a first-base hit, 37 to 73 earned a second-base hit, 74-110 earned a third-base hit, and 111-144 earned a home run. Incorrect answers or answers that came after the allowed five seconds counted as a strike. Three strikes earned an out, just like in regular baseball. Three outs resulted in a team-up-to-bat change as did all eleven students taking a turn.
Sam and Luke were the only ones to roll and correctly answer a home run! Max Mc and Max M both rolled 1X1=1. Each team had three turns at bat. The final score was Team Eddie 18 and Team William 24.
My students have been using XtraMath for several weeks now as a means for improving their knowledge and speed of math facts for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. XtraMath is terrific in that it customizes learning for each individual child then sends weekly progress reports to me and parents. XtraMath keeps track of everything and the kids have really embraced using it. They are motivated by the certificates of completion and the challenge of reducing the time allowed for each answer.
